Healthy Soil: helps plants stay healthy

Healthy soil will help to keep your plants healthy and strong. Stronger plants can better withstand bugs, disease and water stress. Ways to keep your soil healthy:

  1. Make sure you have mulch on it all year
  2. Never walk on it. Make paths and stay on them.
  3. Don't turn it over. This destroys the natural layers that form creating the best substructure.
  4. Loosen soil before planting with a pitchfork, your hands, or a tool like this from Lee Valley: http://www.leevalley.com/en/Garden/page.aspx?p=56803&cat=2,42578,40769&ap=1  or http://www.leevalley.com/en/Garden/page.aspx?p=10521&cat=2,42578,40769&ap=1
  5. Apply compost in the fall to the top (then mulch before winter). By spring it will have worked itself in enough.
